I Could No Longer Do It Alone

When The Carpet In Your New Home Smells Musty

by Warren Brown

Buying a new home is certainly exciting, but it's also a change that comes with some challenges. For instance, when you discover that the carpet in your new home has a musty odor, you may be perplexed as to how to get rid of this issue. Musty odors are quite common in carpets in homes that have sat uninhabited for a while. Luckily, this is an issue you can easily address by following these steps.

Step 1: Sprinkle on some baking soda.

Musty odors often come from the beginnings of mold and mildew growth. If you don't see any mold or mildew, then you've gotten lucky and discovered the problem before it had a chance to get too bad. However, you'll need to dry out the carpet in order to ensure the mold growth does not continue. An easy way to do this is with baking soda, which not only absorbs moisture, but also neutralizes odors. Sprinkle a generous amount over your carpet. (It's really cheap, so use as much as you want! You want to actually see a layer of baking soda on top of the carpet.) Let the baking soda sit for an entire day, and then vacuum  it up.

Step 2: Reduce the humidity in your home.

To keep the mildew (and the musty scent) from coming back, you need to ensure your home does not get too humid. This might just be a matter of keeping the air conditioning on during the summer. (AC extracts moisture from the air to make a home feel cooler.) If your AC is running and your home still feels moist – or if it's the middle of winter and your carpet has still managed to develop a musty scent – you may want to install a dehumidifier. You can purchase a portable one and place it directly in the room with the musty carpet, or you can have a whole-home dehumidifier integrated with your HVAC system.

Step 3: Have the carpet professionally cleaned.

If your carpet smells fresh after following the first two steps, you can feel free to skip this step. However, if you're still noticing a touch of musty odor, it might be from mold spores that have become trapped in the carpet fibers. A professional carpet cleaning can take care of that. Make sure the company you hire uses a powerful extraction system to ensure the carpet dries out quickly after shampooing; otherwise, you may end up with more smelly mold.
